Hail Lord Rama and Invite Prosperity, This Ram Navmi
One of the most popular and widely celebrated Hindu festivals is Ram navmi. As the name suggests this day is celebrated by commemorating the birth of King Rama. King Rama is the most worshiped Hindu Lord who defeated the evil king Ravana and restored peace and order.
Rama Navmi falls on the ninth day of the Hindu month Chaitra, this day is also called as ‘shukla paksha’. According to the Georgian calendar this usually occurs in the month of April.
Rama is known as one of the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. This day is celebrated with much gusto all over the nation. It is observed as a holiday by most private sectors and all most all public sector offices.
Temples and households are decorated with garlands and traditional decorative objects and the statue of the deity is also bathed, decorated and layered in new clothes and garlands. In many temples and households a figure of baby Rama is decorated and placed in the cradle and ‘the birth of the lord’ is enacted. People sing songs, bhajans and offer sweets to each other. Grand preparations are done and exquisite delicacies are cooked. In some places people also observe a fast and a diet specific in accordance to VedaDharma. Ram Navmi is considered a very auspicious day by many Hindus to start something important in their lives.
This day also marks the end of the nine-day utsava (celebrations) called Chaitra Navaratri. In north India this is an exceptionally popular festival. Here Ramnavami procession and musical shows called Ramlila are conducted. The main attraction in this procession is a decorated chariot with impersonators of Lord Rama, his wife Sita, his brother Laxman and his disciple Hanuman. Ramlila is the musical interpretation of the mythology Ramayana.
