The concept of World Environment Day was conceived on 5th June 1972 when the United Nations held a Conference on the Human Environment that ended on 16th June 1972. Thus this day is held on 5th June every year since 1973. The international events of the day are run by United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The United Nations Environment Programs are such that not only looks at the large scale policy making but also personalizes environmental issues connecting every individual and making them realize their responsibility as well as power to bring a positive change for a sustainable and equitable development.
